Chapter Twelve

The mountain really was beautiful. I could see why Tamsin wanted to come here rather than staying at the bar. Though it wasn’t really for me. Actually, the more I thought about it, the more I realised I’d started to see Dragon Soul as some kind of home. It wasn’t permanent, not by a long shot, no one wanted to live in bar dorms for their whole life. But maybe the area would work well for me...

“There’s really something magical about it,” someone said, making me jump out of my skin and turn slightly. A little old woman took a seat beside me, looking up at the majesty of the scene.

“Yes,” I whispered.

“I recognise you, child,” the woman said.

“I don’t think that’s possible,” I replied. “I’m not from here.”

“I didn’t say that,” the old woman said. “Do you have a name?”

“Holly.” I didn’t hesitate to answer, something deep within me was telling me to trust her, and given that I was in dragon territory, I planned on listening to that part.

“My name is Dorris.”

“Hi, Dorris,” I ventured, wondering what she wanted.

The two of sat in silence, still staring at the mountain. I wished I knew how to shift. Then I could fly up to the top of it and look down from there.

“I know what you’re thinking, child.”

“I doubt that.”

“You want to fly. I know that look. I’ve given that look many times.” A wistfulness lingered in her voice, as if flying was something of the past for her and she had no choice.

“I don’t know how to fly,” I whispered, hardly wanting to acknowledge the truth.

“I think you do. You just have to trust in yourself.”

“Doubtful. I don’t know how to change into my dragon at will.”

Dorris laughed. “Do you feel your dragon inside?”

I nodded. “Of course.” My dragon was a part of me. There was no getting rid of her no matter what I did.

“Then you know how to shift. You just have to trust her.”

“I don’t know how to do that.”

The woman frowned. “No, I can sense that. There’s a lot of pain within you. But the sadness and the anger are holding you back. By not embracing how you truly feel, you can never unleash the dragon inside you. That’s what is holding you back. Not the grief written all over your face.”

“I doubt-”

“Hush, child. Do not make the same mistakes your father did.”

“I don’t have a father.”

“Of course you do. Everyone has a father. And I knew yours. It’s why you’re so familiar, you have the same nose.”

My hands flew to my face, my fingers travelling up and down and trying to feel the connection to someone I never knew. “I’m not from here,” I pointed out.

“No, but your father was. He left to go marry and mate with your mother. He came back five years later in disgrace. Anger ate away at him and he died alone, never able to turn into a dragon again.”

“What happened?” I whispered, only half wanting to know. The little bits I’d heard from Mama were enough to have put me off ever wanting to know him.
